How Big Should My Dining Room Table Be for My Room?

Customized wood dining table

The dining room table is more than just a table. It’s where meals are shared, stories are told, friends are gathered, and loved ones tell you all about their days.

How the dining room table feels is just as important as how it looks. But, not all houses are built the same and some of us are working with oddly shaped rooms, inconvenient archways, and not-so-common sizes that make our dining room dreams seem impossible.

So, like many of us, the question, “What size table is right for my dining room?” Or, if space is tight, maybe it sounds more like, “What the heck would even fit in here?” Don’t worry, we have you covered. We can help you create a custom wood, handcrafted table that fits just so, in whatever space you’re working with.

 Let’s dive into it.

How to Find What Size Table is Right For Your Dining Room

No matter how big or small your dining space, a beautiful, made-to-order dining room table is just the thing to pull it all together. But sizing is key. To figure out the right size table for your dining room, it’s time to break out the measuring tape.

First, you’ll want to make sure there’s enough space around the table to pull out chairs and still have some room to walk around. A good rule of thumb is to leave roughly three feet of clearance on all sides of the table so there’s ample feeling of comfort for your guests.

Generally, dining tables are between 28 and 32 inches high. The width, length, and depth of a dining table depends on the number of people you’re trying to seat and the shape of the table, but typically you want to make sure there’s enough room for place settings on both sides of the table. A rectangular table for four people, for instance, will usually be 36 to 40 inches wide and 48 inches long.

Small Dining Room Ideas

Of course, the size of your table also depends heavily on the size of your space. One of the biggest benefits of going with a made to order dining table is matching the dimensions to perfectly fit the quirks of your home.

If you have a small dining space, too large of a table can make that small space feel even smaller. You will still want to abide by the 3 feet of clearance rule, if possible, to make sure there’s enough room for your guests to sit comfortably. If space is too limited, work with what you got or reach out to get an expert opinion. Trust us, we have one.

Another option in a small space is to go with a built-in table. If you go this route, you can use banquette seating against one or two sides of the table, and maximize your space by using benches that can be tucked away while not in use.
