Nap Trap: /næp træp/

  • The viscous cycle of taking naps during the day and therefore being unable to fall asleep at night, which in turn lead to the need for more nap
  • being physically stuck under a sleeping baby, due to strict adhering to a child's nap schedule

Some furniture exists to be admired. This daybed exists to be used until you lose track of the afternoon.

The wooden daybed starts with solid white oak and a silhouette borrowed from Scandinavian modernism. The base features sweeping arch cutouts that form the legs from sturdy solid wood while maintaining a slight appearance. The result is a luxury daybed that looks lighter than it has any right to, almost floating despite all that timber. Those graceful curves taper to the floor and give the whole frame a midcentury feel without copying any particular era too closely.

One unit works as a wood twin daybed. Two units connect side by side to create a full size daybed. Run them in a line for a sofa daybed that spans a window wall. Configure an L-shape for a custom daybed sectional that fills a corner. The modular daybed system uses visible wooden cleats and recessed hex bolts to link frames together, and the honest hardware becomes part of the aesthetic rather than something hidden behind upholstery. This is furniture that shows how it was made.

The backrest carries a horizontal gap that lets light pass through and keeps the piece from reading too heavy. Pillows stack against it comfortably when you want daybed couch seating for conversation. Remove them and the whole surface opens up for the kind of lazy Sunday sprawl that burns through an entire book.

The solid lumber comes from trees that fell naturally around Los Angeles. We selected boards with grain that swirls and moves, knots and character marks included, then finished everything with hard-wax oil that protects the surface while keeping that raw tactile quality. Dress it with linen cushions and chunky throws and bolster pillows and it transforms from a wooden frame into something you genuinely do not want to leave.

This is a customizable daybed for living rooms, sunrooms, reading nooks, guest rooms and anywhere a day bed makes more sense than a couch. This is a luxury day bed built by hand in our workshop for people who take their downtime seriously.

We named it The Nap Trap because you should know what you are getting into.

Absolutely. Head to our Get My Custom Quote page and let us know what you're looking for. We'll get right back to you with a quote. You can also head to the Ask A Question section above on the right-hand side for quicker answers.

We'll show you. If there are any questions about what your particular piece will look like, we'll include a custom design rendering with your purchase to make sure we'll all on the same page with the dimensions, design and orientation of your piece.

Hard-wax oil is our standard finish, which provides the most natural finish possible while protecting against stains or marks. You won't even need coasters! See our updated Hardwood Care Instructions for full details.

our urban hardwoods
sycamore, elm, ash & eucalyptus

These sustainable planks come from non-farmed trees that fell in our local neighborhoods. Local urban-lumber milling companies turn them into beautiful dimensional lumber, rather than allowing them to be sent to landfills. We've fostered excellent relationships with these organizations (noble, good-looking heroes whom we love dearly), so they'll call us when the newest batches are about to be dried and milled.

Our Reclaimed Wood
Old-growth Doug fir

We respect the use of all reclaimed wood, but at Parkman we only use salvaged lumber from Los Angeles County structures that were built about 100 years ago or more. This old-growth wood is derived from ancient trees that, thankfully, are no longer being deforested. We prefer this sustainable lumber due to its natural durability and beauty. Conversely, most furniture wood these days comes from farms that cut their crop young, leaving the lumber comparatively soft and bland. These farms also use massive amounts of energy and water, unnecessarily damaging the global environment.

in-house fabrication

& fair wages

We perform all of woodwork and metalwork in our Los Angeles workshop so that we can personally oversee every aspect of your build. Most shops you'll come across simply design and market products, but don't actually build any furniture, preferring to outsource the physical work to offshore or lower quality white-label shops. We lean into the entire process, from inception to inspection, and pay fair wages with benefits to our expert craftspeople.
